Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez scored a brace to silence neighbours United in their Carling Cup semi-final first leg with a 2-1 win.

That’s silenced Eastlands. Lovely goal too for United, as Patrice Evra floats over a pass to the right wing to Luis Valencia, he nutmegs Craig Bellamy before crossing low to the far post and after Wayne Rooney’s flick is saved by Shay Given’s outstretched hand, Ryan Giggs taps in from a yard for his first derby goal since 1996.

Rafael tries to keep up with Craig Bellamy and tugs his shirt - outside the penalty area. Bellamy tries to stay on his feet, but falls inside the box. There wasn’t another foul inside as referee Mike Dean tries to argue, but he gives a penalty. Wrongly. Rafael is booked, Edwin van der Sar is booked, and Carlos Tevez steps up to smash the penalty into the roof of the net. A missile is thrown on to the pitch.

United fail to clear a corner and it falls to Pablo Zabaleta on the edge of their box. He heads it back into the mixer, it falls kindly for Vincent Kompany to hook back across goal and there is that man Carlos Tevez to head past Edwin van der Sar from close range. Tevez sprints away to halfway, cupping his hands to his ears in celebration.
