An enthralling match between Sweden and Denmark was called to a halt after referee Herbert Fandel was attacked by a fan.
The Danes had completed an unprecendented comeback after coming back from three goals down through Liverpool’s Daniel Agger, Villareal’s Jon Dahl Tomasson and Bremen’s Leon Andersen before the German official sent off Sevilla’s danish midfielder Christian Poulsen and awarded a penalty to Sweden.
The decision prompted one member of the crowd to run onto the pitch and attacked Fandel. The result will now to be decided by UEFA’s disciplinary committee with the Danes sure to receive heavy sanctions for the disturbance.
